My professional work was in the institutional church in the area of advocacy for Pacific and Asian Americans and later multi-cultural ministry. Irene Eber gave me a foundational understanding of the political issues between the Taiwanese and Chinese constituents in my work. The Vietnam War and “teach-ins” shaped my commitment to social justice. I find I still use “sorting factors” and putting ideas in boxes as a way of understanding complex subjects and comments from groups. The Whittier years were the beginning of life-long quest for learning, understanding and reflection. gave a sense of class unity as we ALL endured them together. But even the large lectures in Freshman English, Western Civ., British Civ. I enjoyed the smaller classes and opportunities to relate to our professors. The culture and atmosphere at Whittier gave me a broader sense of life beyond what I experienced growing up in Hawaii. Had I stayed in Hawaii, I would have attended the University of Hawaii, which felt like an extension of High School. What I loved about my time at Whittier College is that it afforded me a “small college” atmosphere, a sense of community. It was tiny and the water very calm and beautiful. The Panama trip was very rewarding we got to see some of the 365 islands off the coast and camped overnight on one of them. We have traveled to Panama, Cancun and Acapulco. I collect coins, stamps, trading cards and music albums. After I retired 5 years ago I now have time to work on some of my hobbies. I’m also spending time presiding over a Home Owners Association as a Treasurer. I’m currently retired although I’m still active in managing housing rentals. I learned the hand-woven textile business and later expanded to ceramics. It was a wonderful experience for my family and me to live and work there. In the early seventies, after three years of teaching in a middle school, I was offered an opportunity to start a business in Guadalajara, Mexico. I spent 33 years teaching mathematics in the public-school system. Another was following my eldest son as his Wilson High School basketball team traveled to Oakland for the state finals and winning the title in 1986. My proudest accomplishment was being nominated teacher of the year in my school district. One of my favorites is Lay Down Sally by Eric Clapton I love classic rock and all those songs I used to hear when growing up.

I really don’t have a favorite movie however, I enjoy westerns and mysteries. Other major events soon followed such as the invention of the calculator as well as the personal Computer. The two major events that occurred while we were at Whittier were the assassination of President Kennedy and the Vietnam War. Pledging for the Lancer Society and getting to know the members of our pledge class as well as playing basketball are among my fondest memories while attending Whittier College. They begin on page 40 with Richard Adams.Įnjoy catching up with classmates and it is not too late to send in your story.
